2006 Viking Race - Day 5

First things first, these pages would not exist if it wasn't for BarkWeb. Wow what a day. Pilots briefing at 7 and back from the hill around 8 - possibly a new endurance record. After some low cloud and swinging wind we didn't start until around 11ish. The first round of the day (round 4) was won by Alexander Kopecny in 45.83. Second was Filip Kalensky and I pipped the marauding Herrig brothers to third. That round (round four) meant that the discard kicked in and I took a slender overall lead from Martin. England A again stayed on top over Germany and Austria.

Round 5 kicked off and Martin H immediately flew a superb 45 backed up by Andreas using a bit of thermal assistance to fly a neat 39.- the fastest time of the competition by miles. With the pressure on Mark Southall and John Bennett pulled great times out of the bag for England A. I on the other hand as last to fly in the round committed the basic school boy error of cutting the very first turn and ended up with a 49.

Quite rightly I dropped to third overall but fortunately, despite my worst efforts, England A stayed on top. Individually Adreas stole first spot from Martin but by only 7 points!

The vaguely more consistent slope lift settled thing down a but today but there were still many people feeling hard done by.

The scores are amazingly close - but the forecast for the final day tomorrow is not so good. Stay tuned...
